Testing Adsense for Domains

LATEST UPDATE 21 January 2009 – And End of Test

Final test numbers below.

TOS Questions

Per several questions – I have wondered whether I am violating the Google TOS by publishing this information.  A careful reading of Paragraph 7 of the TOS states I cannot disclose:

click-through rates or other statistics relating to Property performance in the Program

I am probably splitting hairs here, but technically “click-through” rates are not shown for this program.  Nothing about “performance” – since simply landing on the page is not a performance measure since “performance” would be a basis for revenue (maybe??) – and other paragraphs (such as Paragraph 4) clearly do not apply to Adsense for Domains.  There is no correlation between the data presented and the revenue numbers – and I am allowed to show raw revenue numbers.  Yes, I am splitting hairs, and no – If Google disagrees with me there isn’t much I can do.  I will monitor their TOS for the inevitable update concerning Adsense for Domains.

Overview

I started a test of Adsense for Domains on 17 December 2008. None of these domains were previously in any parking system, I just had a placeholder page for them. I will regularly update this page with hits, revenue, and tracking info. If you don’t want your ads showing up on parked domains, check out this step-by-step guide.

For these domains, I have tweaked the colors and added a few obvious keywords for each.

24 December: 1 Week

I am going to start maintaining my data in a spreadsheet out of Google docs – after one week my total “profit” from my domains is 72 cents. WHOOOO! So far I think I could have done much better developing these domains with some basic templates, adding a bit of original content, and leaving enough alone. With Adsense for Domains, the biggest problem I see is that I have no way of seeing the queries that brought traffic. I’m collecting no usable intelligence on any domain. However, unlike most domain parking operations that handle a lot of the work for you (and provide reports), going straight to Google requires significant manual labor with no data collection benefits.

So far, I’d say the prediction of the imminent demise of domain parking companies is a tad early.

18 Dec – 24 Hours

Well, despite an initial promising start, the earnings for the first day are very disappointing.  In fact, only one domain made any money at all.  But its a start – next update in a couple of days!

  2. Great! I just had it activated in my account, so I’m going to be testing as well, but on an extremely small scale (limited to 10 domains max, most likely).

Definitely will be checking back to see the results!

  3. Good Luck with this bro.

  4. Another interesting stat to post would be the number of page views for this page. It is currently well indexed by Google and it is among the first few links that showed up when a user searches for adsense for domains.

I would love to see that stat since a lot of traffic to your parked domains are going to be driven through this website.

  5. Phil, Love your Blog! I would love to try Adsense Domains on my 5,000 domains if they had not already been kicked off adsense.

Is Google two faced about Adsense Guideline compliance?

I had three Adsense accounts with 5,000 domains recently cancelled, reason being violation of the Adsense Guidelines. The 5,000 domains were different real estate listing sites , each one with different real estate listings content for different cities and countries.

One never knows but, I am guessing Google felt the content was too similar for the 5000 domains. I am wondering what the heck Google is doing? Adsense for Domains sounds like a violation of the adsense guidelines to me.

Google is like a 800 pound gorilla, it can do anything it wants. But, is that fair for the rest of us?

Best of luck with your blog. I’ll be back again to follow you “experiment”.

    All the best,
    Max

  6. Thanks for your invaluable feedback on your experiment on earning from parked domains. I sincerely wish you earn lots and lots of money.

  7. Nice info. I was looking for sites trying out Adsense for Domains since the product is not yet available in my country. Will check this out every now and then for your progress.

  8. That’s great to see your experiment posted for everyone to view. However, doesn’t it say in Google’s TOS that we cannot have a “Link” to the parked domain site? I thought the visitors had to come from the search engine. You can post the url but it cannot be clickable. I don’t know… I could be wrong. If it’s ok to have a link that would be wonderful. Thanks.

    RESPONSE FROM PHIL:

Thanks for your concern. I reviewed the AdSense for Domains Program Policies and feel like I am well within the bounds. Specifically:

    Encouraging clicks
In order to ensure a good experience for users and advertisers, publishers may not request that users click the ads on their sites. Publishers participating in the AdSense for domains program:

May not encourage users to click the Google ads by using phrases such as “click the ads,” “support us,” “visit these links,” or other similar language

May not promote sites displaying ads through unsolicited mass emails or unwanted advertisements on third-party websites

May not compensate users for viewing ads or performing searches, or promise compensation to a third party for such behavior

If anyone does find an issue or violation, please let me know!

  12. Thanks for posting your test results here. It saves people a bunch of time trying out Adsense for Domains on their own.

  13. Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving a comment. This test you are running here is absolutely fantastic and I will be curious what changes will the AdSense TOS suffer. I will be regularly checking your results and will link to you on my future updates. Thanks again and happy new year

  14. wow, experiments, I like it

  15. when i see new feature in my Google Account show up, Google for Domain, then i bough two domains distancetrading.com and mobiledistance.com. please give me some words about these domain. i will try to buy the of 8 domains.. lols if all this is works!

  16. interesting, thanks for posting the stats. I am wondering though, where do page impressions come from on these parked domains. “Direct Navigation” ? I got a bunch of domain names parked with Adsense for domains, and I saw daily page impressions (for say 10 of my domains) are at 160.. now 160 visitors per day from type in traffic sounds great, I decided to take em’ off the parking and build a page on each domain with Google analytics code installed – I was the only one to visit my domains according to Analytics’ stats.. how come?

    1. I honestly never figured out where the traffic came from – one of the distinct drawbacks of Google parking (you don’t see the stats). I actually got a big boost in traffic on one domain because someone linked to it from a blog posting – why I have no idea (typo?).

  17. So Phil, it’s now May 2009, approx. 4-5 months later, are you going to stick w/Adsense for Domains?

If not, where would you try next?

    Nice charts, btw. ;-)

  18. I have just parked my domain with google adsense let’s see what happens and how much I get from it.I will definately disclose it to others after a month

    here is the parked domain.
